Developing skills for teaching music
COLOURSTRINGS   colourstrings

Colourstrings is an approach to understanding music, developed by Geza Szilvay, a Hungarian violinist and teacher working in Finland.

silvay Through carefully structured Music Kindergarten lessons that start from as young as newborn, children learn to sing, move and experience musical concepts before they start instrumental lessons. As a result they are able to feel musicality, read rhythm notation and sing from the Kodály handsigns before and alongside instrumental playing.

Musical Terms , through its link with Colourstrings, offers training courses for adults with some musical background (suggested Grade V theory and practice or equivalent). Completion of the Foundation course will result in an internationally recognised Certificate for Associate Music Kindergarten Teacher. This course usually comprises of 5 consecutive days, followed by some practical experience and then a further set of 3 weekends. In addition, written assignments and a musical assessment need to be completed.

For full details please go to the Colourstrings website – see links page.

The course is designed for instrumental teachers who want to work with beginner pupils; for general teachers who want to specialise in music in school or for those who are looking for a career change to fit in with family life and are interested in running private musicianship classes.

The Foundation course is conducted in English but it can be run at a venue anywhere in the world, be it Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Malayasia, Australia or the Americas.

Musical Terms also designs courses or workshops for education departments of national orchestras, music centres, music services or peripatetic music teachers in local education authorities who want to know more about different approaches to teaching and learning music.

Contact Musical Terms if you would like a “taster” series of Colourstrings classes for your pupils (FS, KS1 or KS2). 5-6 week courses are available.
