Developing skills for teaching music
EARLY YEARS
Courses and workshops can be designed for teachers and practitioners working with Early Years, in Nurseries and Pre-school settings. Both are designed to increase confidence and enjoyment when making music with very young children. There is a great deal of research to show that music is a vital foundation to learning and development and yet it is not extensively covered in most training for practitioners working with Early Years. Practical experience, especially with colleagues, can help to awaken understanding of what music-making entails.

Course 1: “Enjoying Music-making”
Practitioners attend a series of up to three one-day workshops that equip them with ideas for using music to cover the Foundation Stage curriculum and meeting the recommendations for Birth to Three Matters. Practitioners wishing to attend one or two days are welcome. The subjects covered include the following ideas but your suggestions can be included:-

  • games and activities for songs
  • composing songs for topics
  • using instruments indoors and outside
  • ideas for dance, movement and performance
  • developing music in free play
  • progressing and extending ideas

Course 2: training to be a Music Leader
This course consists of 3 elements:

  • Musical Terms attends the setting for a series of up to 5 weeks and leads a musical session with the children. A designated member of staff attends each session and completes a simple practical assignment between each session (developing a song or rhyme or activity).
  • After a recommended period (6-12 weeks) Musical Terms returns to the setting to meet the member of staff and assess progress, reinforce confidence and extend ideas.
  • A personally designed book accompanies the course including songs, lesson planning advice and resources.

NB
Parents and governors of Early Years settings invited to attend the courses.
